1052/1062 Lab Information

Lab Descriptions:

There are three different types of labs: Planetarium, Observatory, and Experimental. We offer three planetarium labs, two observatory labs, and one experimental lab per course. There are a total of six labs to attend, and students are only required to attend each lab one time. Labs are offered multiple times per semester, so that students can find a time that best works with their schedule.

Students should arrive for Lab Check-In 15 minutes before their schedule lab time (in front of that lab's meeting location). Labs begin promptly at the schedule start time, and late entry is not permitted. Each lab lasts about two hours, but this does not include transportation to and from the Observatory for the Observatory labs. Observatory labs take about two and a half hours with transportation time included.

Transportation is provided for the Observatory Labs. Students will meet up in ENV 290 and then will transfer to the transportation vehicles if weather conditions are favorable. Otherwise, Cloudy Night Labs are conducted at the ENV.

Meeting Information:

Labs meet in ENV 150 or ENV 290. You can find more information and directions in Lab Locations

Lab Meeting Times:

Labs are self-scheduled by the students using Canvas Calendar. You can find examples of Lab Schedules here: 1052 Lab Schedule Spring 2026 1062 Lab Schedule Spring 2026

Scheduling Labs:

Students use Canvas Calendar to sign up for labs.  For more information on how to schedule labs you can view this youtube video. If a student has a scheduled lab that they can no longer attend, lab reschedules are allowed.

To encourage students to sign up for labs early in the semester, there is a schedule that is determined by the Lab Coordinator for when students should complete labs in order to earn full credit for the labs.

Example:

  • Week 6: Students must attend at least one of the labs
  • Week 8: Students must attend at least two of the labs
  • Week 11: Students must attend at least three of the labs
  • Week 13: Students must attend at least 4 of the labs
  • Week 15: Students must attend at least 5 of the labs

Requirements for Lab:

There are no required materials to be purchased for lab. However, when arriving to a lab students will need to bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Completed Pre-Lab Quiz
  • A Wi-Fi compatible device with access to Canvas.
