Streaming Astronomy! | Department of Physics – Astronomy Education Program

Streaming Astronomy!

Streaming events will be put on hold throughout the month of October in preparation for re-opening. More announcements to come soon.

UNT's Astronomy Program has gone online! While our facilities remain closed for your safety during this pandemic, we are bringing you astronomy themed shows that the whole family can enjoy. We will also be giving away some prizes! We will host different installments of these streaming series on our Facebook and YouTube channels. Descriptions of those series will be updated here as we experiment with new ideas and schedules for streams. Make sure to make sure to like and follow us on our social media and YouTube channels to get the most up to date information.

We will be making posts where you can submit any questions you would like answered on social media when we announce the week's theme. You can also post your questions in the comments in the live stream where your questions will be answered live. See this weeks theme below.

Astronomy Trivia

Twice a month on Sky Theater and Rafes Urban Astronomy Facebook

Compete in our Astronomy Trivia to win cool prizes! We have put our questions in Kahoot and will use it to play the game. Twice a month we will have new themes and a prize which we will update below. We will post reminders to our page about the event and you can get reminders from Facebook by indicating you are going on our event page. This will also give us an idea of how many of you to expect.

How to Play: Join us on our Facebook Live Stream to get the Kahoot pin and view the questions. We will give everyone 5 minutes to get logged into Kahoot and the live stream open. It's probably a good idea to use your phone for Kahoot to submit your answers while you watch the stream on your computer or tv. That will also allow you to compete with your friends and family. You can even join late if you want but that might put you at a disadvantage if you miss any questions.

  • Thursday (4/15) - Theme: Cosmic Stuff
  • Thursday (4/29) - Theme: General Astronomy
  • Trivia Prize: 1st place gets a small meteorite

Sky Update

Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 2pm on the Sky Theater and Rafes Urban Astronomy Facebook

Every 1st and 3rd Saturday, UNT Astronomy's Sky Update is streaming this new web-series designed to get viewers familiar with constellations and other celestial events or objects you can find in this week's sky. Our UNT student astronomy presenters will not only show you how to locate objects in the sky, they will show how you can do it yourself using astronomy software you can download for free. At the end of these shows, they will answer any burning astronomy questions you may have.

Cost: These events are FREE and are a service to you!

Donations: If you have it, we ask that you donate $1-$5 to the Sky Theater Fund to help support and sustain our Astronomy Outreach Program, its facilities, and student employees during this time when it is not possible to generate revenue through traditional means. Larger donations are also welcome.
